Heteronyms

Same spelling, different pronunciation
Heteronyms are a special type of homonym. Each word has two unrelated meanings with different pronunciations.

Words with related meanings are not true heteronyms. But the different pronunciations still make them harder to recognise. Be aware of words that sound different in different grammatical forms. Examples: abuse, confines, contest, convert, convict, deliberate, excuse, extract, frequent, house, learned, live, perfect, read, rebel, record, separate, survey, upset, use.
